Florida has made the news for another police shooting of an unarmed black man. This time, the shooting occurred in Pompano Beach and resulted in the death of 56-year-old Gregory Frazier. As if the shooting couldn’t be any more ridiculous, Frazier was in his backyard eating chicken at the time he was approached by the Broward Police Department.
Officers were called regarding an altercation at the Pompano Beach residence, according to New Times BPB. Earlier in the day, Frazier had been embroiled in an argument with his daughter which resulted in him pulling a knife on her. The report makes specific mention that the knife he pulled on her was a small Swiss Army pocket knife that he’d frequently kept on his person. His sister, Deborah Frazier, was the one who called the police but by the time they showed up the argument was a thing of the past.
Deputies entered the residence with their guns drawn and repeatedly ordered Frazier to get down on the ground, per the report. According to his nephew Quartaze Woodard, Fraizer, who was enjoying fried chicken at the time, told the officers “leave me alone.” Frazier was shot and handcuffed as a result of not complying with the officers’ orders. Once officers handcuffed him and realized he was unresponsive they attempted CPR. Frazier was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deobrah Frazier insists she’d have never called the police if she knew this was going to happen. “They just came in and started shooting right away, “she said.
The two unnamed officers have been placed on administrative leave as an investigation into the shooting unfolds.
