It’s immediately clear that this extra point attempt was not going to work out for Texas. They just didn’t know how bad it was going to get.
Texas fans were still celebrating a 22-yard D’Onta Foreman touchdown run that brought the Longhorns within one late in the first quarter when disaster struck. Trent Domingue lined up for the extra point, but it was all wrong. Cowboys defensive tackle Vincent Taylor came through in a hurry to block it. With his chest. Not done, Taylor picked up the ball and took off running the other way.
The end zone, however, was a long ways away. Taylor is a 310-pound defensive player not built for running long distances. Later in the second quarter, Taylor blocked another extra point, bulldozing between the center and the guard to get a hand on the ball, which was recovered by the Cowboys again. They only got the ball most of the way downfield that time. It was their third blocked extra point of the half.
Maybe Texas should try going for two? I don’t know. I’m not a coach.
