Tracy Morgan was terrific on 30 Rock. That much we know. What we don’t know, at least not for certain, is whether that was a product of a writing staff and an actor teaming up to create a supporting character that killed in small doses, or whether he’s just really good at his job and is capable of sustaining that comedic intensity over a full half hour as a lead. But it looks like we might find out pretty soon, as FX (and in all likelihood, their new FXX comedy channel) just got into the Tracy Morgan business.
The 30 Rock comedian has closed a deal to star in comedy pilot Death Pact, from Rob Long and Tad Safran. The single-camera entry will feature Morgan as a formerly lazy, pot-dealing assistant high school coach who returns to his hometown as a decorated war hero. He runs across three down-on-their-luck friends and former students and sucks them into his new, radical self-help philosophy, which involves harsh consequences for failure.
I think I speak for everyone here when I say CAST GRIZZ AND DOT COM IN THIS SHOW IMMEDIATELY. As anything. Tracy Morgan’s neighbors, his former co-workers, concerned but helpful police officers, a by the book prosecutor and a renegade defense attorney who butt heads in the courtroom but share a pitcher of beer and a laugh when the trial is over, the loving same-sex parents of one of the former students he’s mentoring, literally anything. Just put them in the damn show. Or give them their own show. I’ll settle for either or both.
