I’m probably guilty of over-hyping “The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award” but it is definitely one of my all-time favorite It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia episodes. Opinions will vary between good and great but for me it hit a sweet spot of meta commentary on the show’s own lack of recognition and just really solid all around comedy. Everything about The Gang attempting to replicate (and fail miserably at) what’s successful at mainstream popular bars couldn’t have done it for me more.
Let’s jump right into the Sunniest moments.
The Gang gets meta from the onset.
Charlie is not on board.
But, seriously, what else are they going to do? Just know, it means NOTHING.
Scoping out the competition for ideas proves to be weird.
Seriously, this place is bizarro world.
But maybe they’re on to something…
Such a perfect exchange. I can’t find a GIF of “It’s strange to have one black friend and not be constantly talking about it,” but I think a little pee came out I was laughing so hard at that one.
“You’re wondering how we’re going to make Dee attractive enough that you’ll want to be together?” “Yes.”
Also, Dee’s comedy timing issues are wonderful.
And the lights are really working for her.
How can you make an orgasm joke with no jizz drink follow up? Mac is lost.
But at least Dee’s timing is getting better.
Charlie breaks out to save the day.
That’s just simple arithmetic.
And we are treated to one of the finest Charlie Kelly songs of all time.
I really can’t suggest enough watching this behind-the-scenes clip on the different takes and song versions. Charlie Day: all the awards.
