If you’ve spent any time on Twitter, you’ve already seen people raving about La La Land after watching early screenings of the Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone vehicle at film festivals. Our own Mike Ryan said in his review, “La La Land will be a lot of people’s favorite movie of all time. It’s going to be one of those movies listed under ‘favorite’ in online dating profiles from people who want to be thought of as hopeless romantics, who maybe don’t quite get what the movie is actually about.”
Written and directed by Damien Chazelle, the Acadamy Award nominee behind Whiplash, the musical also stars John Legend, Rosemarie DeWitt, Finn Wittrock, Callie Hernandez, Sonoya Mizuno, Jessica Rothe, Tom Everett Scott, and Josh Pence.
Here’s the official synopsis:
La La Land tells the story of Mia [Emma Stone], an aspiring actress, and Sebastian [Ryan Gosling], a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.
Even though I’m usually not into musicals, this trailer — and all the critics who keep raving about the film — has me convinced. And I promise I’m not only psyched about this movie because they quoted us on the poster:
It’s going to take a lot more than a co-worker being quoted to bribe me. (Money. It takes money.)
