A Tribe Called Quest continues the remarkable run of their return by releasing a new video for the album track “We the People.” Everyone’s singing the praises of the group’s We Got It from Here…Thank You 4 Your Service, including us, since it’s an album filled with gems, but this one is one that cuts harder on the political side, as does the accompanying visual. As it plays, the clip highlights some of the ills that plague society mixing in the beginnings of a rebellion once the people wake up. For the second verse, the late Phife Dawg is represented by animated street art plastered on a wall that allows him to deliver his part of the song. The action culminates with Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed, Jarobi White and album collaborator Busta Rhymes leading a massive protest composed of the figurative “bad folks” listed in the track’s hook: blacks, Mexicans, the poor, Muslims, and gays.
The “We the People” video is just another way to draw attention to how timely the messages are on We Got It From Here considering the post-election protests occurring across the country in the days since Trump was elected. For a group that waited nearly 20 years to make their return, Quest can back just in time, packing the words the world needed to hear.
