Florida entered Saturday afternoon’s rescheduled contest against LSU as 14-point underdogs in Baton Rouge. In the end, Jim McElwain’s team needed to generate a goal line stand in order to clinch an appearance in the SEC Championship Game, and the Gators rose up to do just that.
LSU took over with 3:24 on the clock and 75 yards to go with a 16-10 deficit, but even after the Tigers managed to generate a goal-to-go scenario with two timeouts and plenty of time remaining, the Florida defense was too much. On 4th-and-goal from the one-yard line, LSU’s Derrius Guice took an awkward toss, plunged into the mess up front, and attempted to stretch the ball beyond the goal line. Florida stacked up the talented freshman ball-carrier, though, and that was the end of what was a dream scenario.
In just 60 minutes of game time, SEC fans went from pouring over tiebreaker scenarios to sending the Gators to a match-up against Alabama in Atlanta on Dec. 3. It remains to be seen if Florida’s offense can be successful enough to threaten the terrifying Crimson Tide in a big spot, but if you look closely enough, there may be a College Football Playoff scenario emerging for the Gators if a few things go their way over the next few weeks. Who would have thought that given where this crew was on Saturday morning?
