While the fans have never let their fervor for television’s suavest cannibal die, the biggest champion of Hannibal‘s potential fourth season is showrunner Bryan Fuller himself. Despite the fact that the show was cancelled by NBC in 2015, Fuller has discussed his desire to bring back the beautifully gory show a number of times before.
While Fuller may be exceptionally busy working on the insane American Gods, his enthusiasm for Hannibal hasn’t waned, this time telling Entertainment Weekly’s “Post Mortem” podcast that he pitched a “great idea” to former leads Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen.
“I have [had] conversations with Mads and Hugh. We’re are all excited about the prospect of returning to the story. There’s some hurdles to get through…[But] I just had a great idea for season 4. There’s an interesting next chapter in the relationship between Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter that would be fascinating to unpack. I’ve shared it with the gentlemen and they’re both keen on it.”
With Mikkelsen joining both the Marvel and Star Wars universes and Dancy leading the Hulu original The Path, this cat and mouse duo have certainly had plenty to do since the show ended. However, it would be a dream come true to see those two get a proper ending instead of a (literal) cliff-hanger. Whether or not that will actually happen may depend on whether the rights to Silence of the Lambs (elements of which Fuller wanted to incorporate into season 4), currently belonging to the producers of Jonathan Demme’s film, will be available when they revert back later in 2017.
