Anytime a WWE wrestler steps into a Complex video you can expect fancy fast cuts, glossy close-ups of sneakers, and slow-motion fashion ogling. When the world famous three-time tag team champs step into a Complex video, you can expect all of the above, as well as Big E in an extremely tight graphic t-shirt.
For the uninitiated, Complex is a media company for the youth of today covering music, style, sneakers, and Enzo Amore buying sneakers before everyone decided that they’ve had enough of Enzo Amore. To be fair, they’ve also featured Ric Flair and Shane McMahon on the series.
Before we break this bad boy down, familiarize yourself with the video:
Kofi (in a beautiful Bobby Heenan shirt) tells the story about the time he and Big E (wearing an extremely tight Ric Flair shirt) teamed up for the first time. Xavier Woods (sporting his Hot Topic Golden Girls shirt) came out and planted the seeds for what would become The New Day. Woods would later reveal his Golden Girls shoes which I refuse to screencap and post, out of respect for all of us here.
Kofi remembers the exact pair of shoes he was wearing, scoring some goosebumps as he told the story and looked at the sneaker on display. A sweet moment followed by an informative one as host Joe La Puma discusses the reasons why some wrestlers wear boots while some prefer sneakers.
Then the video is graced with friend of wrestling, friend of Complex, friend of well, probably everyone else, rapper Wale. They discuss the “Intercontinental Champion” shoe which is pretty good looking and, unless The Miz has anything to do with it, might actually be more prestigious than the real Intercontinental Championship.
The rest of the video features embarrassing stories about buying the wrong shoes at Payless, Big E’s favorite shoe as a kid, and that time Kofi Kingston wore those questionable Steph Curry shoes. The rest of the New Day is on your side, KD.
Bummed out that nobody brought up the shoes Woods wore in one of the first choir videos the New Day pushed out in the early days. No way anywhere in NYC that displays shoes in shrink-wrap sells those church flats.
Seems like only a matter of time before a for real for real shoe company gets behind a wrestler, a la Nike getting behind Michael Jordan (K-Mart and John Cena don’t count).
Could you handle the kid in your school who swears by his new Romans? What about the girl at the club with the Sashas? Would anyone wear the Drifter’s? If you got the Shields in May 2014, would they still be wearable today? Would Ric Flairs come with a lifetime warranty like Doc Martens?
