John Cena and Nikki Bella’s breakup has been one of the biggest wrestling stories of the last month as the wedding set up by a WrestleMania proposal fell apart weeks before it was set to take place.
There have been plenty of rumors about why the two split up, but both Cena and Bella made public appearances on Tuesday and spoke about their relationship ending and what led to that, with the hope from both they can work things out. First, it was Cena who had an emotional interview on Today with Hoda and Kathie Lee as he detailed his heartbreak and how he has to force himself to get out of the house and talk to strangers.
Cena also said that he unequivocally hopes to be back with Nikki and was insistent that he wants to marry her and have kids, something that was long a sticking point in their relationship. Nikki, meanwhile, was at NBC Universal’s upfronts promoting the upcoming season of Total Bellas and naturally got asked about the Cena interview, which she had not seen yet. Her response was a bit cringeworthy.
“Wow. Well, I’m speechless. Yeah, that’s crazy. Yeah,” Bella said with a nervous smile and a lot of glances at her sister, Brie, when she was read Cena’s quote about wanting to marry her and be the father of her children from his Today appearance.
She went on to discuss the upcoming season of Total Bellas, which will show Daniel Bryan’s return to wrestling as well as the wedding planning and eventual breakup of her and Cena. While discussing that, she explained that she still has hope they’ll get together, but says she has to find herself again before getting back into that relationship.
“I have hope. I’m at a point in my life where I kind of lost me and I want to find me and work on me,” Bella said. “I just want John and I both to live happily ever after whether it’s together or separate and I just don’t want us to go down the road in life and have regrets of like ‘I did this for you’ or ‘you did this for me,’ so I think it’s okay in relationships to take that moment. The day I say my vows, I want to say them once and I want to fully mean them, and so that’s what made me hesitant — am I ready to say these vows?”
Bella said she didn’t believe in cold feet until it happened to her and it seems as though there’s some serious soul-searching going on from both parties before anything can happen moving forward. The initial reaction from Bella to being told what Cena said probably isn’t what John was looking for, but I guess it could’ve been worse and she could’ve shut down a potential reconciliation completely.
