So we noted that today is the 50th anniversary of The Beatles appearance on Ed Sullivan, but I’m afraid the celebratory nature of the event has been missed. Thankfully this Rolling Stone special from 1977 surfaced and it features a 15-minute tribute to the fab four spanning their entire careers.
It’s the perfect counterpoint to the heights of that Ed Sullivan appearance because this is probably what the kids would call the literal worst. It’s like watching the homemade version of Across The Universe. From the video:
Beatles tribute from hell! From the Rolling Stone Magazine 10th Anniversary TV special in 1977, found by me on an unlabeled Beta tape at a flea market. Featuring Ted Neeley (the guy who played Jesus in “Jesus Christ Superstar”), Patti Labelle, Yvonne Elliman and several others. I’m sure most of them would prefer this never be seen again.
The seventies were clearly a wonderful time to be alive. It looks like the same people who made the Star Wars Holiday Special made this. Congrats to those folks because they’ve done more than any college girl with a radio show could’ve done to make me hate The Beatles.
