Potential 2016 presidential candidate Mike Huckabee appeared on The Daily Show last night to promote his new book, and the conversation with Jon Stewart inevitably turned to Huckabee’s news-making, pearl-clutching comments about Beyonce.
“She doesn’t have to be vulgar in order to set the trend,” Huckabee told Stewart. “Do you know any parent who has a daughter who says, ‘Honey, if you make really good grades, someday when you’re 12 or 13 we’ll get you your own stripper pole?'”
“That’s diminishing Beyonce in a way that’s truly outrageous,” Stewart replied, before playing footage of Huckabee jamming alongside Ted Nugent during a performance of “Cat Scratch Fever” — a song notorious for celebrating man’s promiscuous pursuit of women (Nugent has introduced the song onstage as “Can’t Scratch Her Beaver”).
Huckabee tried to claim Nugent’s track is different because “it’s an adult song,” but Stewart was having none of it, snapping: “You can’t single out a corrosive culture and ignore the one that you live in just because you’re used to it.”
“You excuse that type of crudeness because you agree with his stance on firearms. You don’t approve of Beyonce because she seems alien to you,” Stewart said, before referencing another song certain hypocritical people would trash if it was sung by a performer with darker skin: “Johnny Cash shot a man just to watch him die — that’s some gangsta sh*t!”
Huckabee tried to recover by insisting Stewart read his book — God, Guns, Grits, and Gravy — but Stewart already had. He didn’t exactly give it a ringing endorsement.
