Legendary journalist Bob Woodward was on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Wednesday. He managed to get Donald Trump to say that he would go to war with Mexico in order to get that darn wall built on our shared border.
First of all, if you haven’t gotten tired of Trump’s long-winded answers to straightforward questions, then just listen to Woodward try and get an answer out of him in the video above. Or you can read the transcripts at The Yucatan Times or at Real Clear Politics.
First, Trump tells Woodward that the wall is going to be a “serious wall” and not a “toy wall,” and that it’ll cost $10 billion. Then, when Woodward asks how Trump will get Mexico to pay for such a thing because “they’re a sovereign nation,” Trump says that we’ll take away the subsidies that we currently pay Mexico just because we’re weak negotiators.
And if taking away the moolah doesn’t work, here’s what’ll happen:
I’m sorry to press on this, but how would you grab that money? If they say no, would you be willing to go to war to make sure we get the money to pay for this wall?
Trust me, Bob. When I rejuvenate our military, Mexico’s not going to be playing with us with war, that I can tell you. Mexico is not playing with us with war. Look, I have great relationships with the Mexican people. You’ve been seeing I’m winning every single poll in these primaries when they go out, when the polls come back in with the Hispanics. I have thousands of Hispanics that work for me and over the years tens of thousands that have worked for me over the years. I will tell you that the problem our country has is that our leaders are so weak — we have so many ways of getting the money to build the wall.
A lot of this seems to defy facts. For example, if Trump has “great relationships with the Mexican people,” don’t count Vicente Fox among them.
But it makes sense that Trump would warmonger. It remains to be seen if we will see this play out, starting in 2017.
