Law enforcement investigators are searching for two witnesses who may be able to help them in the case of Ahmad Khan Rahami, the man suspected of going on a bombing spree through New Jersey and New York City over the weekend. The witnesses in question are the two men who spotted a suitcase sitting on West 27th Street and decided to take it. They tossed away the device located inside, thereby unwittingly diffusing a homemade bomb.
“We’re very much interested in speaking to them,” NYPD Counterterrorism Bureau Chief James Waters told reporters. “There are no criminal charges. They are not in jeopardy of being arrested,” he clarified.
According to the FBI, security footage taken from 27th Street shows how the two men “allegedly located a piece of luggage on the sidewalk, removed an improvised explosive device from the luggage, and then left the vicinity leaving the device behind but taking the luggage.”
Investigators have not yet been able to question Rahami, who is in custody at University Hospital in Newark after being treated for gunshot wounds inflicted during a shootout with police officers on Monday that led to his arrest. A cursory look at the suspect’s notebook, however, shows Rahami’s fascination with terrorists including Osama Bin Laden, the Boston Bombers, and American-born jihadist cleric Anwar al-Awlaki.
