Bad news, ladies. If you were thinking about finally settling down with the convicted murderer of your dreams, your options just got a bit thinner.
Joran van der Sloot, who was convicted of murdering Stephany Flores in 2010, and is the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Natalie Holloway, married Leidy Figureoa , a Peruvian woman, on Friday morning. It’s fairly likely that Figureoa was aware of Van der Sloot’s past when the two met, because their meet-cute occurred at the prison where van der Sloot is currently serving a 28-year sentence. Figureoa came to the prison to meet a family member who was serving a sentence, and while there, she met van der Sloot. The two apparently fell for each other pretty fast.
It’s worth noting, Peruvian prisons are less strict about visitation rules than American prisons. Family members and loved ones are actually allowed to visit inmates within their jail cells. One of the more recent visits must have gotten pretty steamy, because Figureoa is set to give birth in September.
If the couple were planning on waiting until van der Sloot’s release, and eventually starting a life together, they may be in for a rough time. Once van der Sloot is done serving his current sentence, he is expected to be extradited to the United States and charged for his role in the Holloway case.
It has been suspected that van der Sloot is getting married as a means of avoiding extradition, but his lawyer, Maximo Altez, swears that his intenions are pure:
“He’s getting married because he’s in love and is having a child,” Altez said in May. “There are no hidden agendas.”
Only time will tell if van der Sloot is telling the intentions, but one thing is clear: the convicted felon market is drying up fast. If you’re dreaming of getting hitched to Hot Felon Jeremy Meeks, you may want to make your move pretty soon.
