Khizr Khan and his wife, Ghazala Khan, made headlines over the summer when they challenged Donald Trump onstage at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. The pair, whose son (Army Capt. Humayun Khan) lost his life defending his fellow soldiers from a suicide bomber in Iraq in 2004, have since quietly receded into the background. Yet that didn’t stop Khizr from appearing in a new political advertisement for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, which began making the rounds on television and online Friday afternoon.
“In 2004, my son was stationed in Iraq. He saw a suicide bomber approaching his camp. My son moved forward to stop the bomber when the bomb exploded. He saved everyone in his unit. Only one American soldier died,” says Khan. As his voice begins to tremble, he adds: “[My son] was Muslim-American. I want to ask Mr. Trump, would my son have a place in your America?”
According to CNN, the emotional commercial is a part of what campaign staff and top aides call “Clinton’s closing message.” Their intention is to use the “uplifting and hopeful” television, radio and internet ads to counter Trump’s more combative rallies, which have only become more virulent since numerous sexual assault allegations were levied against him in recent weeks.
