Now that Hillary Clinton is officially the Democratic nominee for president, we can probably see people who aren’t happy about that ramping up their sexist rhetoric about her. Case in point: a truly horrible t-shirt showed up on Amazon recently, allowing the wearer to express the sentiment of what they wish OJ Simpson had done with Clinton before she could get this far.
According to Mediaite, reporter Stacey Burns found the t-shirt, which features an American flag silhouette of a bride and groom, with a nice message, written in cursive, “I wish Hillary had married OJ.”
Amazon’s customer service number is 1-866-216-1072. You know what to do. https://t.co/LMUMe8S2fQ pic.twitter.com/GuhCNPoK9A

Why would someone be offended by this? Is it the patriotic American flag imagery? The implication that Clinton got to where she was because of her husband (while this may be true, it doesn’t take into account her own abilities and determination)? Or is it the “joke” that people actually wish Clinton dead for running for being a woman running for president that’s got you seeing red? It was likely these reasons and more that motivated Burns to tell her followers to call Amazon customer service and get this shirt removed. And as of Saturday, it seems to have worked.
Mediaite points out that there are many other similar items on the Amazon marketplace, which means getting them all banned, would probably be like playing whack-a-mole. It’s another sobering reminder of how the first woman to win a major party presidential nomination is not safe from this rhetoric, and that the internet has actually given it a wider platform. At least people can also also use social media to speak out, though.
