A scary situation unfolded on a flight from Cancun to Los Angeles on Monday as Legally Blonde and American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson actress Selma Blair had a bad reaction to a mix of medication and alcohol. Blair was returning from a family vacation with her ex and their son when the incident occurred, and from the details reported by TMZ it was an unnerving scene. She allegedly began “screaming uncontrollably” in her seat and could not be calmed down until two nurses came to her aid. With their assistance and some extra oxygen, she recovered enough to land at LAX and made it off the plane via stretcher to a hospital where she received further treatment.
The report did not specify what drugs Blair ingested or how much alcohol she was drinking at the time the reaction took place, but since she was on a flight with her family and she doesn’t have a major history with public incidents like this it is more probable than not that this was just a case of an in-flight cocktail unexpectedly clashing with prescription drugs. It could be more than that, but without further details expecting the worst is a bit unfair.
Selma released an apology following the flight that is heartfelt and sincere and fills in some of the details of the emergency.
“I made a big mistake yesterday. After a lovely trip with my son and his Dad, I mixed alcohol with medication, and that caused me to black out and led me to say and do things that I deeply regret. My son was with his Dad asleep with his headphones on, so there is that saving grace. I take this very seriously, and I apologize to all of the passengers and crew that I disturbed and am thankful to all of the people who helped me in the aftermath. I am a flawed human being who makes mistakes and am filled with shame over this incident. I am truly very sorry.”
As far as celebrity apologies go, this is one of the more sincere efforts in a while. Here’s hoping this was really just a one-time incident and Selma is back in full health after a few days resting at home.
