If when you heard the news last night or this morning that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver were calling it quits after 25 years of marriage you thought, “Gee, I never saw that coming,” well, you just weren’t paying close enough attention.
How come, you ask? Well, the clues were right there hiding in plain sight on Twitter, Facebook and Youtube, Silly!
A few paragraphs into the Associated Press’ writeup on the split was this:
The former governor tweeted frequently during his recent travels to Brazil, Nigeria and France, but Shriver was not mentioned in his online updates from the road. Shriver, also active on social networks, posted three updates on her Twitter page on the day of their 25th wedding anniversary, April 26, but did not mention the milestone.
About a month before the anniversary, Shriver wrote on her Facebook page that she was going through a transition in her life.
“As you know, transitions are not easy. I’d love to get your advice on how you’ve handled transitions in your own life,” she said in a video posted on YouTube.
“It’s so stressful to not know what you’re doing next. People ask you what are you doing and then they can’t believe that you don’t know what you’re doing,” she said.
This should be yet another reminder that, despite how much we may want to delude ourselves into believing that the two don’t intermingle, our web lives and real lives do intersect, and, no matter how hard we may try to shield what’s going on in our heads, we often leave clues about our internal struggles and triumphs without really meaning to that any mildly skilled amateur forensic web sleuth can pick up on.
Personally, I knew this marriage was done when I heard that Arnold was lined up to do “Twins 2” with Danny DeVito. I mean, it was bad enough that he made Schriver suffer the indignity of being a politician’s wife, but now THIS. There’s no way she was gonna stand for that.
