Hillary Clinton‘s pick for vice president, Tim Kaine, has spent most of August campaigning on his party nominee’s behalf. From reminding voters about his Donald Trump impression — a dad joke come to life — to advocating for voting rights in battleground states, the Virginian senator is doing it all. Or at least that’s what it seems, as the self-professed harmonica aficionado has yet to prove his abilities with the popular bluegrass instrument.
Never fear, for everything changed during a campaign stop in Asheville, North Carolina on Monday night. That’s when, according to Politico, Kaine joined a local bluegrass band on stage at the Catawba Brewery. The 58-year-old politician huffed and puffed through “My Home’s Across the Blue Ridge Mountains” and “Wagon Wheel,” the latter of which the Virginia-based band Old Crow Medicine Show co-wrote with Bob Dylan back in 2004. (Yes, Dylan and O.C.M.S.’s Ketch Secor. Not Darius Rucker of Hootie & the Blowfish fame.)
“That felt great,” Kaine later told NBC News. “Nothing makes me more nervous than doing that. But it’s good to get out of your comfort zone.”
Aside from playing a few tunes, the senator also partook in some local gastrointestinal offerings — specifically barbecue and one of Catawba’s beers, a Witbier style called White Zombie Ale.
