Apparently, Kickstarter records are made to be broken. Only a month ago, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night broke records for a video game on the site. And now, with seven hours left to go, Shenmue III has broken the record yet again.
Sitting at $5.8 million as of this writing, Shenmue III might be the first game-based Kickstarter to cross the $6 million mark, and it’s already in the rarefied air enjoyed by only a handful of Kickstarter efforts. That run on Kickstarter has been controversial, to say the least, but it’s clear the game has enough of an audience that it doesn’t matter; it had a goal of $2 million that was cleared almost immediately and has been raking in cash ever since.
Now, of course, it becomes a question of actually delivering the game fans have waited more than a decade for. No pressure, Mr. Suzuki.
