The flow of casting news for X-Men: Apocalypse has been building over the last couple of months. Back in November, we heard that Oscar Isaac was going to follow his appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens with a role as the villainous Apocalypse the latest X-Men film, then earlier this week we heard that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen wouldn’t reprise their roles as Professor Xavier and Magneto.
Now comes word via tweet from Bryan Singer and then 20th Century Fox that they have cast young Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Storm — replacing Famke Janssen, James Marsden, and Halle Berry.
Welcome to the Mutant family: @SophieT (Jean Grey), @AlexShipppp (Storm) and @TyeSheridan (Cyclops). #XMenApocalypse

That’s Sophie Turner, aka Sansa Stark from Game of Thrones, Aaliyah bio-pic star Alexandra Shipp, and Mud co-star Tye Sheridan.
Turner isn’t an established star that is on-par with some of the names that had been circulated, but Turner seems like a solid choice to play the young telepath, especially after a breakout season on Game of Thrones last year that allowed her to show a bit more range. I can’t speak to Shipp’s ability to play Storm since I’ve never seen her work, but the 18-year-old Sheridan seems ready to graduate after strong performances in Joe and Mud, so he could be a good choice to play Cyclops.
X-Men: Apocalypse is set to start filming in the spring, with a planned release of May 27, 2016.
