Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 doesn’t open until May 5, 2017, but we may have learned a huge plot point courtesy of Bradley Cooper during the press tour for his new film, Burnt. To be fair, it sounds like he may have only gotten two characters confused and misinterpreted a relationship, or perhaps he’s having fun gooning the interviewers during a long press tour. On the other hand, this could be a genuine (and huge) spoiler, so consider this your spoiler warning.
We already know Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will reveal who Peter Quill / Star-Lord’s dad is (someone different than in the comics), and Chris Pratt already knows who it is and said James Gunn’s pitch “legitimately put tears in my eyes.” We may have just learned the identity several months early, courtesy of Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) who casually dropped some seeming spoilers while co-interviewee Sienna Miller valiantly tried to get him to stop digging that hole deeper.
As he says in the video above (as transcribed by Games Radar), “Josh Brolin’s the villain, no? Or he’s the main villain, no? He was in the first one, he played whatshisname’s Dad. You know who I’m talking about? The Dark-Lord… the main guy.”
He goes on to make it very clear he’s talking about Thanos being someone’s dad, but it’s not entirely clear if he’s saying he’s Star-Lord’s dad or if he thinks Ronan the Accuser’s nickname is “Dark Lord” and he’s Thanos’ kid. Considering Cooper did his part in voiceover in a booth miles from everyone, he could just have his characters confused, but it sure does sound like he just revealed Star-Lord’s dad while Sienna Miller tries to pry the shovel from his raccoon paws as he just keeps digging.
The look on his face the moment he realizes he may have spoiled something says it all:
Man, sometimes you just gotta get out of a situation quickly…
