After throwing shots at other awards shows for how they honored Prince, BET needed to show and prove to back up all the tough talk. Well, they did just that as with Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Bilal, The Roots and a lot more.
Erykah performed “The Ballad of Dorothy Parker,” a deep cut from Sign O’ The Times and Bilal did a performance of “The Beautiful Ones” straight out of the Purple Rain movie.
Speaking of “Purple Rain,” can we talk about Jennifer Hudson? The former Dreamgirl absolutely killed it as only she can. She even had the whole crowd waving their hands in unison with her as she did her best to make the recently deceased legend proud. And by the way, Stevie Wonder was on the keyboard for her right after he and Tori Kelly performed “Take Me with U.” Yeah, all of that just happened.
Janelle Monae traded in her usual black and white attire for an all-white outfit that would make doves cry tears of joy as she put her soulful touches on a handful of Prince classics: “Delirious, “Kiss,” “Pop Life” and “I Would Die 4 U.”
Last but not least, longtime Prince friend and collaborator Sheila E. rounded out the tributes with a high energy performance “Housequake,” “Erotic City,” “Let’s Work,” “U Got the Look,” “A Love Bizarre,” “The Glamorous Life,” “America” and “Baby I’m a Star.”
So, did the BET manage to live up to their boasts saying they would top Billboard’s tribute?
