Today marks the 50th anniversary of 7-Eleven’s now infamous frozen dessert drink known as the Slurpee. It’s a complicated mixture of water, ice, and mysterious sugar flavorings that are — at best — mildly refreshing. To celebrate more than five decades of selling overly flavored sugar water, 7-Eleven is giving away free Slurpees all day today, July 11 between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
But the fun doesn’t stop there. The convenience store has also released a celebratory “birthday cake” flavor to commemorate half a century of refreshment. That’s right, for a limited time only, you can enjoy all the flavors of a gas-station birthday cake (actually very delicious and value-priced) with the refreshing texture of half-melted snow.
