This 81-Year-Old Grandma Is An Unlikely ‘Ding Dong Ditch’ Master

Provided they’re not passing along an email forward or giving a hot take on The Future of America, we tend to trust our grandmas. They’re a treasured resource and we come to rely on their good nature. But what happens when one of these grandmas goes rogue and flips our rules about door knocking etiquette the finger?

Eighty-one-year-old Irishwoman Olive Smyth is being hailed as a delightful badass thanks to a YouTube video that’s popped up online of the nan playing a game of Ding Dong Ditch. (Or “knick knack” if you like saying the names of games weird.) With her son armed with a camera, Smyth knocked on a neighbor’s door and enjoyed the sweet thrills of absconding before the dweller could find her there. If you love seeing grandmas on the run being cheered on by their adult children in the process, this video ticks off an alarmingly specific number of boxes for you.

How did this Ding Dong Ditch plan come about? Olive’s son Mark shared the details with The Irish Independent.

“My father just passed away in March and I wanted to cheer my mother up so I asked her what she would like to do for her birthday,” reveals Mark.

Turns out Smyth wanted to see her old neighborhood. And when she arrived, she got just a teeny bit devious:

“…she laughed and said, ‘God, I remember playing knick-knack on all these doors with my friends. Oh, the memories!’ So I said, ‘Why don’t we do it now. Let’s relive your memories.’

The Smiths aren’t the only ones happy to soak in this bit of mischief. At the moment, their video has racked up an impressive 43,000+ views and 357 YouTube likes. Who knows? Maybe next week we’ll see a Vine where Olive is lighting a flaming bag of poo on a neighbor’s porch. It’s not like anyone is going to catch her. She’s locked down the ditch bit of Ding Dong Ditch and could soon be terrorizing a town near you.
