These Last Minute Travel Ideas Will Save Your Spring Break

Spring Breakers
Believe it or not, spriiiiiiiiing breeeeeeeaaaaaaak is right around the corner. Don’t worry if, between studying for midterms, rush, and refereeing dodgeball games, you haven’t had time to think about it, because we’ve thought about it for you. And while it may be a little too late to whip your hot bod back into summer shape, it’s not too late to book a trip!

We have some great ideas for you — from classic Cancún to not leaving your bedroom. Here we go, SPRING BREAK!

Do Something Philanthropic

Sometimes spring break is about more than beaches, boobs and beers. There seem to be a handful of options for students interested in selflessly volunteering their time. The first is less expensive, closer to home, possibly less scenic and involves an organization like Habitat for Humanity or United Way’s Alternative Break. The other is definitely more expensive, requires a passport, and can go beyond helping people to helping animals and the environment, through an organization like Earth Watch.

Whichever voluntourism route you choose, we thank you in advance for balancing out the sinful spring breaks of our pasts.

Do Something Cliché

Ironically, many spring breakers (in all their blackout, boobie flashing glory) are no longer flocking to the same Mexican vacation destinations of old because their parents think it’s dangerous. Instead, they’ve moved on to the latest hotspot for a classic spring break: Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. In the words of Stefon, “this place has everything.” Underground night clubs in caves with fire shows and stalactites, hotels with discos and trapeze lessons, and a floating snorkel party cruise.

If you’re looking for the classic spring break, this is the spot.

Go Home

Unless you live somewhere awesome — like Hawaii or…nope that’s it — going home for spring break is probably not the sunny, tropical retreat we typically envision. But don’t underestimate the power of an alarm free week with home cooked meals, a full kitchen, your dog, a clean bathroom, and a random assortment of high school friends whose breaks align with yours.

Did we mention your dog? That’s a big draw.

Go Someplace Cold (But Mountainous)

Although the weather may be the opposite of the typical MTV beach house vibe, your spring break doesn’t have to be the opposite of fun. Some people just don’t like the beach (Note: you shouldn’t trust them). Still, if you can’t go toward the equator, a ski trip to Canada serves as a pretty good consolation prize. Rent a house like this one with all your friends. It may not be Girls Gone Wild, but there’s nothing quite like hanging out with a bunch of friends, with a raging fireplace, and plenty of booze, after a long day on the slopes.

Do Something A Little Different

If you want to do something a little different for spring break this year, perhaps a trip to South America should be on your radar. Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil and it’s home to loads of things you look for during spring break. For example, there are beaches (namely, the Copacabana) packed with people, endless nightlife options, great music, and amazing food (mmm Acai bowls).

Slightly less mmm about Rio is the Zika virus but that is only really dangerous for pregnant women and you’re way too young for that. Be fearless, use protection, and try to score some deals!

Do Something A Lot Different, Like India!

Do a little research about Udaipur, India. It may seem excessive for spring break, but once you see what this place looks like, it’ll quickly find its way to the top of your bucket list. The city of Udaipur is located in the western Indian state, Rajasthan. With incredible historical temples and palaces along (and on top of) the region’s notoriously romantic lakes, it’s no wonder Udaipur was voted No. 1 “World’s Best City” by Travel + Leisure in 2009.

Go Someplace Warm But Still Domestic, Like Florida

Perhaps you just realized your passport needs to be renewed and ain’t nobody got time for that. If you know you’re on the verge of a weather induced breakdown, head south to The Sunshine State! As in, all the way south, to the Florida Keys because when you’re this fragile, there’s no risking temperatures below 70. Key West has all the staples of spring break, warm water, beachside bars, music and Margaritaville.

PLUS, there’s an incredible beach called Fort Zachary Taylor, so whoever told Hanson fans they can’t have their cake and eat it too was most definitely wrong.

Splurge A Little And Go To Europe

Maybe your best friend is studying abroad, or your spring semester class schedule happens to cushion your break with four extra days. Whatever the reason, save some money and make it happen. Meet your friend in Florence, the heart of the Italian Renaissance. Walk through Piazzale Michelangelo and the Ponte Vecchio then step outside the city and sip wine in a Tuscan vineyard.

It’ll be a worthwhile indulgence.

Or… do this?

No, singing at sunrise with guns and James Franco is a bad idea. Peruse the other options again.

No matter what you decide, the only thing that matters is that you’re not in school. Bask in the freedoms of youth and try to see some cool stuff (even if it’s just your dog). Because for the vast majority of people, once school’s over, there’s no such thing as “spring break” and you’ll be lucky to have the same flexibility ever again. (Clearly, we’re a little bitter.)

Happy travels!
