The animal kingdom is full of wonder. It seems like every couple of days we’re seeing something or hearing some animal-based snippet that we previously didn’t know or understand. And although we may have known that jaguars feed on caimans, the act of it actually happening is still impressive.
As hilarious as the man’s reaction is (“Ahhh!”) when the jaguar emerges with the caiman in its mouth. His wondrous exclamation perfectly epitomizes our feelings toward such a graceful maneuver. As a matter of fact, its difficult not to exclaim something when seeing the jaguar in motion. The animal itself is a marvel.
As the third largest cat worldwide, following the lion and tiger, jaguars tend to reside near bodies of water and are known for their swimming ability. So, this is pretty par for the course. But still, damn. Jaguars are cool.
One little snag in the big cat love-fest: Although once found all throughout Central and South America, these animals have now been wiped clear of most of their northern habitats and now live primarily in the Amazon and the Pantanal – a large wetland area in Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay. Currently, jaguars occupy less than half of their historical range but since the animal is so elusive, their official numbers are hard to track. With Amazon acreage rapidly declining, things aren’t looking good. The jaguar population has recently been tagged as “near threatened” on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
So, TL;DR: Jaguars are cool, we should fight to save them (and lots of wildlife).
