With many people drifting to more upscale casual dining chains, the fast food industry has been scrambling for new and innovative ideas for the past few years now to attract back some of those lost customers. In addition to its new all-day breakfast — which has been received to mixed results from both customers and franchise owners — McDonald’s has just debuted a new “Signature Collection” of gourmet extra thick-cut burgers that the chain will be testing in select markets before ostensibly being rolled out to wider markets.
Unfortunately, those test markets only include locations in the UK for now, because when can we ever have nice things over here? At any rate, the burgers boast 100 percent British and Irish beef with brioche-style buns and come in three varieties: The Classic (Beechwood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, wholegrain mustard, mayo, ketchup, Batavia lettuce and red onion), The BBQ (BBQ sauce, coleslaw, red onion, Batavia lettuce, Beechwood smoked bacon and cheddar cheese), and The Spicy (jalapeño slices, Pepper Jack cheese, Batavia lettuce, mayo and a spicy relish).
The new burgers will set you back anywhere from 635 to 782 calories, depending on the variety, and if they do well in the UK, we could soon be seeing them in the United States. Whether or not the burgers will be able to hold their own against “premium” burger chains like Five Guys, In-N-Out, and Shake Shack is anyone’s guess, but we wouldn’t mind being guinea pigs!
