How much does it cost to travel the world for 178 days? Surprisingly, not as much as you’d think. At least, not according to Imgur user avunculurguy, who recently posted a detailed breakdown of his travel costs:
I like keeping track of data. Turns out, over 178 days of travel:
– I’ve spend 331.75 hours in transit (flights, buses, trains, etc.)
– I’ve spent an average of $76.56 per day.
– I’ve spent a total of $13627.43.
– I’ve taken 42 flights with 17 different carriers and I’ve been in the air for 183 hours!
$13,627 may seem like a large figure, but when you consider that it covers nearly a half a year’s worth of travel, and is definitely a salary that’s within reach if you’re working remotely to fund your adventures, it starts to seem more doable.
That’s not the end of avunculurguy’s data, either. He also linked out to a page containing his full travel stats, including a pretty map of the locations he traveled to (mostly Europe — one of the more expensive regions on the planet), and the approximate dates of travel. Also included: a page containing a detailed packing list with his pre-departure to-do’s.
Avunculurguy really wants to make sure he sets us all up for traveling well.
One user commented on avunculurguy’s Imgur post, saying they expected the daily cost to be higher, and acknowledged, “That’s really not that bad.” Another admitted to also keeping track of travel data and food costs.
Avunculurguy talks about the fact that he tries to keep the cost per day down, which makes sense — when you break down the numbers even further, you realize that his average daily food cost is almost exactly $6, while his average daily accommodation cost is $30.18.
This is definitely not luxury travel. But does that really matter? Avuncularguy has seen the world on his own terms. And it’s all for the better if his data inspires someone else to give up the grind and do the same.
