10 Cloverfield Lane is coming out next week, and J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot have done an excellent job keeping it under wraps. But that doesn’t mean Abrams won’t drop hints, and he does just that in a recent interview.
There’s a lot to parse in the interview from Empire, including how the film was originally a low-budget spec script that slowly evolved into a Cloverfield sequel. It turns out that a straight sequel had been imagined, but the arrival of movies like Pacific Rim and Godzilla made them reconsider because they didn’t want to chase a trend. But they did take a page from the kaiju movies of the past in one important respect:
Well, what I’ll say is that there is a new monster in this movie. It isn’t the Cloverfield monster that you know, but this all plays into a sort of larger conceit that we have.
In other words, the drilling for soft drinks has awoken far more than just the monster who destroyed New York, it seems. This is, of course, a classic kaiju conceit: After all, Godzilla has a whole rogue’s gallery of giant monsters he regularly squares off against, so why shouldn’t the Cloverfield monster? Of course, this also raises the question of how the seemingly infected humans the trailers have hinted at come into play, but we’ll just have to find out next week.
