We already got a glimpse of the first shot from Star Wars: Episode VIII, picking up right from the close of The Force Awakens to give us some quality time with Luke Skywalker. And the word — according to Daisy Ridley in Entertainment Weekly — is that Skywalker is a big part of the next film. No hidden maps and silly exile for him this time around. We’re going to get some meaty answers and Jedi wisdom:
“When we went back to Skellig to do the opening of VIII, it was so crazy doing the same scene with a different crew of people,” Ridley said. “[Hamill is] amazing to rehearse with, and I’m very excited to be doing the rest of the stuff. It’s such a good story, seriously.”
She added, “Luke is so cool in this one. Really!”
It should be pointed out that Luke was likely going to be cool, according to anybody making the film. He is still one of the main characters behind the entire series, and he’s still technically a whiny guy. Sure, you could point out that he’s taking a page out of Yoda’s book by running off to an abandoned planet, but it’s more fun to say he’s out there still bitching about Tosche Station and Uncle Owen.
Ridley also joked that the next film is just two hours of Rey and Luke staring at each other. It would still make millions and still get better reviews than Episode II.
