Check Out How Much Work And Tech Went Into Ryan Reynolds’ ‘Deadpool’ Mask

Deadpool did a lot of things right. Sure, it was the movie’s R-rated raunch that caught the most attention, but it broke ground in other areas, too. For example, Deadpool might be the first superhero movie ever where the protagonist’s mask actually looks decent. Movie Batman always looks uncomfortable in his cowl, and Spider-Man is incapable of projecting any emotion with his mask on. Deadpool’s headgear, on the other hand, both looked natural and featured expressive eyes that allowed Ryan Reynolds to act while masked.

Well, Deadpool‘s groundbreaking mask definitely wasn’t an accident. A new featurette from IGN details everything that went into the mask, and it’s pretty impressive stuff. Scanning, modeling, molding, 3D-printing — it’s quite a process. Perhaps the most impressive part are the eye segments, which can be popped out so different eye-shapes and lenses can be switched on the fly.

So yeah, we’re basically to the point where the masks they have actors wear in superhero movies are every bit as advanced as Batman’s cowl in the comics. Hell, Ryan Reynolds probably could have snuck off set in his mask and played superhero for real if he’d wanted to.

Deadpool can be purchased digitally right now, and comes out on Blu-ray on May 10.
