It’s only been a few months since Drake dropped his album/mixtape/meme generator/extended sigh If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late, but the buzz is already building around what Drake’s next new album, Views from the 6, will be.
The hype is understandable. Drake fan or not, there’s no doubting he’s changed the rap game since his third mixtape, So Far Gone, blew up in 2009.
Drake’s rapid ascendance molded the sound of mainstream rap in his image. The former teen television star broke long-standing taboos about acceptable subject matter in Top 40 hip-hop, baring his soul in a half-sung, punchline-emphasizing style that inspired countless imitators.
He used the initial success and cultural cachet from his studio debut Thank Me Later as a license to drift further from expected rap conventions. And listeners followed Aubrey down his emotional and compositional rabbit holes on albums like Take Care and Nothing Was The Same (which features the weddingcore classic “Hold On, We’re Going Home”).
There’s no telling what Drake has in store, but it will probably be sad.
