The never-ending tour of goodwill and guest appearances by Foo Fighters found itself on the West Coast this week. While playing at the Love Ride Festival, a benefit for the Wounded Warrior Project, in Castaic, California, the Sonic Highways rockers decided to throwback once again, covering the immortal rock gods Queen. This time, however, they had a little help from an era of hairspray, excess, and way too much makeup in Ratt’s Bobby Blotzer.
While taking on the great Queen track “Tie Your Mother Down,” the “Round And Round” drummer joined on the sticks while the Foo’s Taylor Hawkins came from behind the kit to sing on lead vocals. And yes, singing is usually Dave Grohl’s territory, but Taylor has sung lead on a handful of Foo Fighters songs, including “Cold Day in the Sun” from In Your Honor and their cover of Cream’s “I Feel Free” from Five Songs And A Cover EP.
The clip above shows that Taylor definitely has the chops to be a frontman if he really wanted to, but let’s not disturb the chemistry of one of the best rock bands working today. Singing drummers only lead to bands breaking up in the most dramatic fashion (see Eagles, Genesis, etc.)
