The attempted Justin Bieber renaissance is in full effect now. He performed at the recent MTV VMAs, his first performance on the show in five years. He also has a new music video out for his song “What Do You Mean?,” and he apparently decided to use the opportunity to do some subliminal advertising toward his former flame Selena Gomez.
For a very brief moment, you can spy the name “Selena” spraypainted on the wall of a skate park surrounded by a lot of other graffiti. Was noted Sk8r Boi Justin Bieber trying to sneak in a shout out to Gomez? If he was, hopefully he didn’t expect it to go unnoticed, because this is the internet, and he is Justin Bieber, so folks have already made it abundantly clear, which is why you are reading this article right now.
This isn’t Bieber’s first subliminal attempt at shouting out Gomez. Her name also appears briefly on the screen during the video for his song with Diplo and Skrillex “Where Are U Now?”

Bieber is asking a lot of questions with his new songs, and he seems to clearly be reaching out to Gomez for whatever reason in a very weird way. Subliminal messaging didn’t work for Zack Morris when he tried it, and Bieber lacks the chronomancy skills of Morris to make up for it.
Regardless, this feels pretty silly, and not the highlight of the “changed man” version of Bieber we are supposed to be seeing.
