Lady Gaga’s Joanne is her most vulnerable album ever without question. Where before she projected herself as an invulnerable monster made of hardassery, glitter and pride, her latest record provided a glimpse behind her stage persona to the person underneath. And as a tender, acoustic ballad, “Million Reasons” was one of the most intimate tracks on the entire album. Gaga’s matched that feel in the track’s music video, providing a behind-the-scenes glimpse of what goes on before her performances.
In the video, Gaga leaves the desert of “Perfect Illusion” behind and turns herself over to a crew of make-up and hair folks. Shots of her getting ready are interspersed with shots of her wearing the outfit from Joanne’s cover and strumming her guitar, looking for all the world like a pink powerhouse Dwight Yoakam.
Since the release of Joanne, Lady Gaga has been far more vocal about her own issues. Perhaps inspired by the emotional tumult she went through while making the album, Gaga spoke for the first time on her battles with PTSD earlier this month. She said that the album — and the seeming open-ness that has grown from it — came from growing older.
“It’s maybe a woman thing. As you get older, you start to realize that you are enough on your own,” she told The New York Times.
That thought certainly holds true in this video, which is largely just Gaga on her own. Check it out up, top.
