The biggest problem that the NFL is facing right now (yes, even more than trying to figure out what a catch is) is the issue of player safety and brain damage caused by concussions. With the new Will Smith movie coming out soon that dramatizes the discovery of CTE in football players made by Dr. Bennet Omalu, the issue of head trauma for current and retired players is at the forefront now more than ever.
At the recent National Football Foundation dinner, former Cowboys’ quarterback Roger Staubach decided to make a joke about mixing up current commissioner Roger Goodell for former commissioner Pete Rozelle due to the fact that he had six concussions during his NFL career. The joke got more uncomfortable chuckles than legit laughter from the audience, but there was one person who aparently thought it was hilarious, and that is the commish himself, who couldn’t hold in his giggles at the thought of memory loss for NFL players.
To make matters worse, Staubach followed up his joke by telling the crowd that he ran the joke by Goodell ahead of time, who actually approved it before Staubach told it on stage.
Roger Goodell: NFL commissioner or real life movie villain?
