Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner was arrested in Goodyear, Az. on Wednesday for suspicion of assault and disorderly conduct. Griner’s fiance, Tulsa Shock forward Glory Johnson, was also arrested.
According to a Goodyear police spokesperson, officers were called to the home around 4:30 PM on Wednesday afternoon after a fight reportedly broke out between the two. Officers found injuries to both Griner and Johnson upon arrival, and both were arrested on the scene. Griner, 24, was released from jail around 4:00 AM on Thursday morning.
Mercury Executive Vice President and General Manager Jim Pittman released a statement regarding the arrest saying:
“The Mercury organization is aware of an alleged incident involving Brittney Griner. We are in the process of gathering additional information, and will have no further comment at this time.”
Griner averaged 16.7 points for Phoenix during the 2014 season, and helped the Mercury win a WNBA title in just her second year in the WNBA. She was also named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year last year, accounting for a total of 129 blocks on the year.
