ESPN gave the sports world a pretty significant news dump on Friday afternoon when it was reported that Jason Whitlock was out as head of the yet-to-be-launched “Black Grantland” vertical, The Undefeated. Richard Sandomir of the New York Times was first to report.

Though it’s big news, it’s not exactly shocking. Whitlock’s reign was a tumultuous one with multiple problems, some of which went public when Deadspin’s Greg Howard penned a lengthy piece on how Whitlock was “poisoning” his own site prior to launch.
