“I’m going to f*cking destroy him. That’s what I’m going to do.”
Those were the words that Alistair Overeem said to UFC Tonight’s Ariel Helwani regarding Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva prior to their fight at this past Saturday’s UFC 156 event in Las Vegas. To add to that sentiment, when Silva warned Overeem during their stare-down that he “better start showing respect”, Overeem responded, “I’m going to f*cking destroy you.” Needless to say, these guys didn’t like each other before Saturday and they probably still don’t like each other now.
However, as for that whole “f*cking destroy you” thing, obviously that didn’t work out very well for Overeem, in case you weren’t with us for the live discussion. Instead, Silva did the destroying, as he simply bashed Overeem’s face with right hand after right hand until he was a puddle of elevated testosterone on the mat. And it was delightful.
Adding to the fun was Herb Dean’s expression as Silva was pounding away:
And of course Silva reminding Overeem’s baffled face about respect was a nice touch.
All in all, I was pretty happy with the UFC 156 PPV. I read a lot of negative Tweets in the hour between the Aldo-Edgar decision and when I drifted off to sleepy town, and I can understand why people didn’t care all that much for the event. But between Silva’s victory, Tyron Woodley’s 36-second knockout of Jay Hieron and Frankie Edgar’s incredible stamina, I thought it was worth the price.
