This past Friday, a new rumor surfaced claiming CBS was in active development of a new Star Trek series. However, seeing there may not be as much to go on as thought, the folks at i09 have supposedly debunked the report as of yesterday:
We contacted Burnett about this incredibly tantalizing rumor, and here’s what he told us:
“All of the FEDERATION information is true…but we did that TEN YEARS AGO. The treatment was written but effectively killed when JJ took over. It never went further than the treatment…and no one ever pitched it…and I don’t know if Geoffrey wrote a full script. While I have been working on AXANAR, and we are building sets, etc,…I know NOTHING about a new CBS Trek series. As for currently working on something with Skydance? NO COMMENT (but if I WERE, it is NOT related to TREK in any way).”
So basically, it looks like there’s a mixture of true information about a 10-year-old project, justified excitement about a new unofficial movie that looks amazingly good, and complete speculation about the future of Star Trek
While that would, theoretically, wrap this story up in a nice tight bow, the problem is that i09 is debunking a statement Latino-Review never actually made. This is what the original report claims:
Bryan Singer’s name has been mentioned for the new CBS Trek as a possible Executive Producer through his Bad Hat Harry productions. While “Star Trek: Reboot the Universe” was invalidated by 2008’s movie Trek, Star Trek: Federation still has a trio of enthusiastic producers, a script and a writer ready to go should CBS decide to give Singer the ahead to develop this new series.
Everything concerning Burnett in Latino-Review’s report is pure speculation on one possible road a new series could take to make it to air. The only “news” being reported is that Bryan Singer’s name is back in the ring for a new Star Trek show. I.E. Burnett would be out of the loop and not actually know if there’s a new Trek on the way at this stage of the game. It’s just possible that CBS could go to him should they proceed to a scripting phase.
In the end, this whole thing is rumor until it’s not. However, if i09 wants to debunk Latino-Review’s speculation of Burnett’s involvement, it should be noted that no one’s claiming he’s actually in the know in the first place.
