The first season of True Detective was possibly one of the darkest and most provocative pieces of television in recent memory. “Torn” is a 90s pop song most famously covered by Australian actress and singer Natalie Imbruglia. How these two things go together so perfectly in this mashup almost restores the faith in humanity that the show repeatedly robs from you.
With lyrics like “I’m all out of faith, this is how I feel/ I’m cold and I am shamed, lying naked on the floor,” it truly fits with the season 2 teaser like a glove. Perhaps a glove that is slipped on to strangle the warm life out of someone, but still, that fit is there. Maybe with the incredible chemistry here, HBO will go all the way in and score more forthcoming shows with 90s adult contemporary. The forthcoming dystopian series Westworld could be scored with Paula Cole’s “Where Have All The Cowboys Gone,” or the trailer for the upcoming season of The Leftovers could feature Joan Osborne’s “One Of Us.” Neither artist would be mad at the royalties.
