There’s nothing wrong with breastfeeding, breastfeeding in public (because babies gotta eat), or even posting pictures of breastfeeding on Facebook. People who are weirded out by it have too many taboos to be interesting (or should just google how to unfollow someone). Most people get and respect that. Unfortunately for Maria Corry, a North Carolina mom who chose to post a photo of herself feeding her baby while out and about, at least five people on Facebook thought her photo was way too risqué for the social-networking site where your aunts and uncles regularly post memes about immigration as illustrated by minions.
Here’s Corry’s original post, which she admits isn’t something she’d generally put up on her wall, but is doing so because she’s done with people “bashing” breastfeeding moms for doing what comes naturally.
Looks fine, right? Just a mom and a baby enjoying some bonding time out in the sun. But apparently that was too much for some of Corry’s online friends, who thought her photo was way out of line. It was reported a whopping five times shortly after it went up. Of course, as Mashable points out, breastfeeding photos aren’t against the site’s rules — no matter how much people apparently want them to be — so the photo stayed. But Corry, who never meant to start a war in the first place, realized that she had to come out and let the trolls know that condemning a woman for breastfeeding while allowing images like the ones you’d see in Victoria’s Secret to be all over the place was hypocrisy, pure and simple.
So, Corry posted another photo. This time she covered her breast with a picture of another breast. One that belongs to a Victoria’s Secret model:
Here’s the most relevant portion of Corry’s caption:
I bet this won’t be reported, because you can see this picture in every mall you step into, huge and blown up outside the store. This is not frowned upon, or ever reported, as it is seen everywhere. But a women nurturing and feeding their baby is looked down on. That is completely absurd!”
Corry, who admits that she was angry when she posted the photo, did go into a little bit of a rant about people who sexualize anything that has to do with breasts (although she apologized for calling people pedophiles), but the takeaway is that she’s holding strong and won’t let others make her ashamed to breastfeed her baby.
