Between leaks, Neil deGrasse Tyson’s philosophical explanation, and Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns-as-source material, we’ve got a pretty good handle on what constitutes the main plot points of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Batman and Superman don’t like each other, so they get into a fight. End scene.
Obviously that’s not all true — what with Jesse Eisenberg’s inclusion as a Social Network-inspired Lex Luthor and all. There’s more to the story, but that’s the part that remains protected. However, Warner Bros. provided attendees at the 2015 Las Vegas Licensing Expo with a new plot synopsis:
Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.
Luthor is obviously a part (or all) of the vague “new threat,” but what’s interesting about this is the fact that Batman is afraid of Superman. Whatever action he takes against the titular Man of Steel in Zack Snyder’s film will be driven by his fear, and knowing what we know about the character of Bruce Wayne, that’s frightening.
It’s especially intriguing when contextualized with Alfred’s (Jeremy Irons) narration from the first teaser:
That’s how it starts. The fever. The rage. The feeling of powerlessness that turns good men cruel.
Sounds like Wayne’s anxiety about his alien competitor will turn Batman bad for the first chunk of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
