Soccer players are tremendous athletes. You just need to look to some of the stuff Neymar can do if you don’t believe it. But they’re also notoriously goofy, gigantic children. And when you give them enough time off or get them in a room without structure that deviates from their original plan (see: a rain delay), they regress into those goofy, gigantic children while remaining tremendous athletes.
As the Columbus Crew were hanging out and waiting for weather to cooperate in their game against the L.A. Galaxy on Saturday, they lined up and gave their very own ‘header challenge’ a go. These are out there on YouTube all over the place; teams head it back and forth down the line and try to get it into a bin (or a trashcan if you’re uncivilized). If it works, the team freaks the heck out and jumps all over the place. The Columbus team’s succeeded, so they reacted accordingly.
The issue here is if I tried this with even just myself, I’d find some way to get hurt. Which isn’t to say I’m not advocating for normal-decently-coordinated-people-who-are-injury-prone to try more stunts like this. I just think I’m going to pass this time around. I fell out of a papasan chair yesterday, so I know my limits.
