Actor Ewan McGregor has expressed his interest in returning to the Star Wars universe, now that Lucasfilm has become an armed and fully operational battle station at Disney. Plus, there’s the whole matter of the “anthology films,” which endeavor to tell Star Wars stories outside of the main series. Some speculate McGregor might reprise his role as a young Obi-Wan Kenobi in such a film.
At the Edinburgh International Film Festival in Scotland, McGregor told reporters he’d be more than “happy to do the story from episode three where I finish up [to where] Alec Guinness starts.” However, when asked about Star Wars: The Force Awakens, young Master Kenobi had only one thing on his mind — the crossguard lightsaber design that made the Internet collectively wet the bed in November:
I’m not sure about the hilt on the lightsaber. If you fight with a lightsaber properly you don’t need one.
The article makes sure to describe McGregor’s point as a joke. I mean, they literally preface his quote with the words “he joked.” However, I can’t help but take the actor’s professed opinion as totally serious — even if it’s just a red carpet quip.
