Seeing a guy walking around in a red robe at a music festival is not unusual, but that guy is usually not the Dalai Lama. As Consequence of Sound reports, the spiritual leader of Buddhism was at Glastonbury on Sunday to celebrate his 80th birthday, and it seems like he had a great time.
After delivering a message of peace and compassion to the festival’s Stone Circle, the Dalai Lama made the rounds at Glastonbury just like a regular dude who isn’t considered by some to be the reincarnation of the Buddha. This included taking the stage with Patti Smith to sing “Happy Birthday” and cut a cake. He told the crowd:
“Dear sisters and brothers, I really appreciate so many people’s expressions of warmth, and I very much reciprocate it. I have dedicated my body, speech and mind to the well-being of others in my daily practice, so when people show these warm feelings, that gives me more enthusiasm. So I very much appreciate it.”
All in all, a pretty solid 80th birthday for the Dalai Lama. Also, probably a good day for anybody whom the Dalai Lama bought something from. We all know he’s a big tipper.
