DeSean Jackson premiered his docuseries reality show Home Team on BET last night. In the series, Jackson hopes to give fans an inside look at his life, his challenges and his post-cut-from-the-Eagles career. As it stands, Jackson is an outspoken player with highly specialized skills. But he’s also one of the smallest NFL receivers and on the downside of a career mostly based on his speed and agility. The show, among other recent events, seems more like a harbinger of his life after football than a return to his heyday as a kick-returning speedster.
But the water is not yet under Jackson’s bridge, the feelings have hardened. He explains in a recording session with his boys (yes, it’s a rap album) that he feels the Eagles did him dirty:
When I was released by the Eagles, I felt they tried to paint a picture that definitely wasn’t true. It was a slap in the face coming off one of my best seasons in the NFL. It’s like, bro, the Eagles tried to blow me up. That’s cold how they did me.
He may have a point, continuing to explain that his lack of a criminal record and similarity to a lot of the harmless players in the league should prove he’s no bad apple. But the series itself is a testament to what makes DeSean Jackson both intriguingly noteworthy and perhaps a risk for buttoned-up NFL execs: He’s outspoken. Jackson has a minor dust-up with his mom/manager later in the show when she rumbles into his rap studio, nosing around for clues to his pastime passion. It’s clear from his stand then that he won’t change for anyone, for better or worse.
Luckily, the Washington Redskins have their fair share of internal turmoil, so he should fit right in.
