Steven DeKnight — the former showrunner for Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix — was in attendance for the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Tuesday. After his panel ended, /Film was able to ask him about what version of Frank Castle we will see when the series returns, and it looks like season two’s Punisher will be the truest version of the character ever to appear on screen:
“None of those movies were under the Marvel Studios banner until they recently got The Punisher back. So this is really the first time that we’re seeing the Marvel Studios from the Iron Man days, when they can control their own product, actually do this character.”
DeKnight further discussed the possible violence featured in the new episodes and says it’s “doubtful” the series will go as bloody and nuts as Lexi Alexander’s Punisher: War Zone. While regretting his departure from the series, the man is a tried and true Punisher fan and personally vouched for the early Frank Castle conversations that transpired before he left:
“Punisher is one of my favorite characters,” DeKnight said. “I’ve talked to Jeph Loeb ever since I first met him back on Buffy about doing The Punisher. So it was a heartbreak to me to have to leave, but I knew it was in good hands and I loved everything we had started talking about about Frank Castle being in that story.”
Daredevil will return to Netflix for its second season in 2016.
